Piles/Hemorrhoids
Piles or Hemorrhoids are caused due to swelling of veins inside the rectum or anus [at or inside the anal sphincter]. At times it may protrude out of the anus.
Causes
  • Constipation. Straining to pass hard stools
  • Long standing or chronic diarrhea and dysentry .
  • Sedentary habits like sittimg at the desk for long time
  • Low roughage diet.
  • At times females suffer from piles during pregnancy
  • Straining to urinate as seen in stricture of urethra or enlarged prostate.
  • Spicy food
  • Cancer of rectum.
  • Obesity
  • Hereditary tendency
Symptoms
  • Pain in the rectum or anus while passing stools. Piles can also be painless
  • Bleeding from anus.
  • Bleeding is bright red, (painless usually, rarely can be painful) along with defecation.
  • Blood splashes in the pan as stool comes out.
  • Burning sensation as from pepper or chilly in the rectum or around the anus
  • Mucus discharge and itching.
  • Prolapse of piles. They regress back or have to be replaced manually.
  • Sensation of incomplete evacuation of rectum.
Do's and Don'ts
  • Do not strain at stool.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting in the toilet.
  • Do not strain while urinating.
  • Get the conditions treated that give rise to difficult micturition or defecation.
  • Use high roughage diet and drink sufficient liquids to avoid constipation.
  • Lose weight, if over weight.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting at work. Get up and move around periodically.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Itching and pain can be relieved by taking hot baths.
  • Use moist wipes, instead of rough toilet paper.
Consult your doctor
If the bleeding from rectum continues for a long time
To rule out possibility of cancer rectum, especially in old people
