Adenoids

Collection of a small pad of lymphatic tissue, similar to tonsils, situated in the throat behind the uvula (i.e. between posterior wall of nose and roof of nasopharynx) is known as adenoids. In health, these glands, like any other lymphatic tissue (e.g. tonsils etc), perform the function of defending our body against infections. When these glands have to fight against repeated infections, they become chronically enlarged and may present with an array of symptoms. This condition is commoner in children and seldom occurs after puberty.

Causes
  • Allergies (dust, food etc)
  • Repeated infection espcially, upper respiratory tract infection
Symptoms
  • Tendency of falling sick increases- falls sick very often, owing to poor resistance power
  • Recurrent cough, cold with or without fever
  • Voice sounds as if speaking through nose - Nasal voice
  • Breathing through mouth
  • Severe nose block
  • Snoring
  • Change in facial features, widening of the bridge of nose in chronic cases
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Headache
Do's and Don'ts
  • Strengthen the child's general resistance to infection by increasing his/her intake of green vegetables, fruits, salads etc and also including food that are rich in Vitamin C like tomatoes, oranges, lime etc.
  • See to it that you minimise their contact with allergens (dust from old toys, unused books or clothes etc).
  • Refrain from giving them cold food & drink.
  • Do not give them food that have preservatives (like packet/tinned food) or artificially flavoured and colored food items (like colored drinks, candies etc).
  • Keep them away from crowded places to reduce their chance of contracting infection.
  • Get their infections treated at the earliest, before they progress into complications.
  • Ask them to take adequate rest during active infection.
  • Steam inhalation and warm water gargles too will provide temporary relief at such times.
  • Hot soups or hot milk may also transiently alleviate the complaints during an acute episode.
Consult your doctor
  • If your child smothers at night, from want of breath in sleep- i.e. there are frequent periods when he is not able to breathe adequately
  • If he keeps falling sick too often, which inturn also aggravates his problem
  • When the child is getting recurrent ear infections
  • If the child has a chronic noseblock
  • In extreme cases, when you realise that the child can't hear properly, which is indicative of a hearing loss
Scope of homeopathy
Homeopathy works by strengthening your child's resistance. These medicines boost the immunity, whereby he/she stops falling sick often. The allergies that your child suffers from, can be eradicated completely; so he/she does'nt come down with acute attacks of respiratory infections at regular intervals. In the course of treatment, the adenoids regress in size and so the obstruction caused as a result of that too is permanently relieved. In this way, a cure of this condition is absolutely possible by homeopathic treatment taken regularly for a certain period.
