| Warts | Warts are small, firm, elevations or lumps on the skin caused by human papilloma virus. They generally consist of enlarged skin cells. There are many types of warts, some soft, others firm while yet other may be horny etc. Some of these may keep increasing in numbers whereas certain others could disappear on their own accord as well. The increase in numbers is often attributed to scratching and through direct contact; both these factors tend to spread the virus and thereby increase the number of warts. | | Symptoms | - Warts may appear as small, pink/brown/skin colored, hard lumps on hands and feet.
- They could either appear solitarily or in clusters.
- The common sites where they chiefly emerge are on neck, face, chest but some may appear at the edges of fingernails and toenails too.
- They are generally painless and may bleed on rare occasions.
| | Do's and Don'ts | - Maintain good hygiene
- Do not use common towels; razors etc.
- Consume a complete, balanced diet that is rich in vitamins, A, B, C, E and if possible, add zinc too. Such a diet enhances our immunity.
- Never attempt to get rid of the warts on your own by burning, cutting, tying a hair around and pulling it off etc.
- Any measures to eradicate warts should always be under medical guidance.
- If one develops warts after the age of 45 years, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for a check up as it could also be a cancerous growth
- If there is a change in the consistency of the wart i.e. it suddenly feels soft/changes shape; or if it begins to itch or bleed, it is mandatory to bring it to your doctor's notice to rule out chances of melanoma or cancer. Try rubbing the wart with a slice of raw potato or inner side of banana
