Migraine

Migraine is one of the most common ailments of the nervous system. It causes recurrent headaches, usually one sided and is accompanied with gastric, visual or other neurological signs. Most of the patients get certain warning signs before an attack (aura) but some may not know till the attack begins. The sufferer is completely normal between two episodes of headaches

Causes

Stress e.g. examination, important interview, financial problems, marital discords etc.
Specific food like chocolate, cheese, red wine, fried or heavy food etc.
Skipping meals
Drugs like birth control pills
Overexertion or fatigue - after exercise, sexual activity
Cold food
Exposure to sun
Loss of sleep or excessive sleep
Excessive or flickering light
Suppressed sexual desire
People with history of motion sickness are more prone to having attacks of migraine

Few warning signs before an attack are as follows:

Mood swings
Visual problems such as seeing dazzling, zigzag lights
Intolerance of excessive light
Ringing in ears
Dizziness
Increased thirst
Excessive drowsiness
Craving for sweets

During an attack:

Headache, usually one sided
Throbbing, pulsating, hammering or bursting headache
Nausea
Vomiting
Headache increased by slightest movements
Giddiness
Intolerance of light, noise
Tenderness of scalp
Light headedness
Mood changes
Excessive irritability
Anxiety

Do's and Don'ts
Learn to deal with stress. Resort to yoga, meditation and regular exercises to relieve stress
Avoid foods which you think cause these problems. Usually they may be chocolate, cheese, fried stuff, red wine, sweetmeats etc
Proper rest and sleep is a must for prevention
Avoid late nights
Eat meals at regular time
Do not over eat
Avoid overexertion
When going out in sun, use an umbrella or dark glasses to ward off the sun
Avoid painkillers and try to sleep it off if possible
As soon as a headache begins, drink 3 glasses of very cold water and place a cold pack on your forehead and lie down in a dark quiet room without a pillow
Complete bed rest with minimal light, noise and odors help a lot in relieving the symptoms
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Consult your doctor
If your headache is accompanied with severe vomiting, weakness or visual problems
You get too frequent attacks of headache
If you get a headache as soon as you wake up in the morning and there is persistent vomiting, this may not be migraine but could indicate raised blood pressure
If headache is accompanied with vomiting, high fever and increased sensitivity of eyes to light, it may point to meningitis
If you develop weakness of one side following a headache

Under homeopathic treatment, initially the frequency, intensity and duration of an attack becomes less and gradually a person becomes totally free of this illness.
